Line grade is the flat multiplier on everything your line does in a lock. It is the most expensive upgrade track in the spool shop and the one that most directly decides whether a fight is winnable at all.

The grades

Those wave numbers are not hard walls. They are the point at which a rival's line becomes strong enough that you can no longer win a lock by sitting still and sawing — you have to fly properly as well. Since rival line quality keeps climbing forever and yours caps at the top grade, late waves are always won with movement, never with purchases.

How rival lines scale

Every wave adds a fixed amount to the rival line grade, plus a small random spread, so two rivals in the same wave are not identical. That spread is why one opponent occasionally feels much easier than the one next to them. It is also why it is worth taking the first lock of a wave carefully — you are sampling the wave, not just fighting it.

Buying order

A reliable order for a first serious run:

1. Line grade to +1 as soon as you can afford it.
2. One level of grip.
3. Line grade to +2.
4. Kite trim, or a spare kite if you are down to one.
5. Line grade to +3 and +4 as the spools come in.

The reason line comes first is compounding: a stronger line ends fights faster, faster fights cost less grip, and cheaper fights mean more cuts per wave and more spools for the next upgrade.

What it does not fix

Line grade does nothing for the stall zone, nothing for chasing falling kites, and nothing for fighting two rivals at once. If you are losing kites to the rooftops rather than to rivals, more line will not help you — trim and better flying will.
